Project FAQ

What is happening?

  • Information Technology will implement an Identity Management (IdM) system June 14, 2009.  IdM will replace the existing Network ID creation and password management application found at https://websec.it.siu.edu/util/id_request.html and https://websec.it.siu.edu/util/passwd.html.  IdM will provide SIUC Students, Faculty and Staff with new Network ID creation and management processes as well as new authentication and authorization tools.

How will this affect my Network ID?

  • When the IdM system is brought online the format of the Network ID will change.  A Network ID will no longer contain the first part of a customer’s e-mail address.   The format of the Network ID will be the alpha characters “SIU” combined with the customer’s unique nine-digit University ID number (Dawg Tag).  An example of a new Network ID is as follows: SIU850123456.

What is a Dawg Tag?

  • The Dawg Tag is a system generated primary ID number (University ID number) used for all faculty, staff and students at SIUC. Please click here for more information about Dawg Tags.

Will I have to change my e-mail address?

  • If you have a Network ID prior to the June implementation of IdM, your e-mail address WILL NOT change.
  • If you become a Student, Faculty or Staff customer after the June implementation of IdM, your Network ID will be generated by the IdM system and you will be given the opportunity to select your own '@siu.edu' e-mail address.

When will the new IDM system go online?

  • The new IDM system go live date is June 14th, 2009.

Who and what will be affected by this change?

  • Any individual or department who has an assigned Network ID and corresponding e-mail address.
  • Any end-systems (servers, workstations, PC’s) that rely on either the IT LDAP authentication server (cstauth1.siu.edu, abbauth1.siu.edu) or the Campus Active Directory server.

How will I get my new Network ID?

  • When the new IDM system goes online in June, users will be able to “claim” their Network ID using the new IdM web interface. This new site will replace the current Network ID management pages found at http://websec.it.siu.edu/util/id_request.html and at http://websec.it.siu.edu/util/passwd.html.
  • If you currently have a network ID, your e-mail address will remain the same.
  • If you do not have a network ID, you will also be given the opportunity to set an ‘@siu.edu’ e-mail address.
  • For detailed instructions on how to claim or convert your Network ID, please see the Documentation section of this site.

Does this mean that Network ID's will no longer be deleted?

  • With the current system, Network ID's are deleted at approximately the sixth week point of the Spring and Fall Semesters. This means that if your are a Student, Faculty, or Staff member who has left the University, your Network ID will cease to exist at that point.
  • With the new IdM system, Network ID's will no longer be deleted. However, access privileges to Campus network based resources will be restricted depending upon your status.

What does “claim or convert your Network ID” mean?

  • Even though Network ID’s will be automatically assigned by the new IDM system, an individual must still “claim” or “convert” their Network ID for use.  This will give all users, both individuals and departments, the opportunity to set a password and security questions on their accounts.  This process will also automatically create accounts, based upon predetermined access roles, in the IT LDAP authentication server and/or the Campus Active Directory.
  • For individuals with existing Network ID’s, this process will retain their current e-mail address as well as renaming their Campus Active Directory account.
  • For individuals setting a Network ID up for the first time, this process will allow the user to customize their own ‘@siu.edu’ e-mail address as well as creating accounts both in the IT LDAP and Campus Active Directory.

I’m a LAN Administrator, what will this do to my Active Directory Accounts?

  • When the IDM system goes active, the Campus AD will still contain all of the original (current) Network ID information.  Initially your users will still be able to log onto their work machines using their original Network ID.  We will ask that you then instruct your users to navigate to the new Network ID management page at https://netid.siu.edu and “claim” their new account.  Once the new Network ID has been claimed, your user may log off of their machines and then log back in using their new Network ID while retain their profile settings and personal files.

My only computer is at work. How will I claim my new Network ID?

  • If your computer is part of the Campus Active Directory do the following:
    • On or after June 14, 2009 log onto your computer using your current 'old-format' Network ID and password.
    • Open a web browser and navigate to https://netid.siu.edu.
    • Follow the instructions found in the Documentation section of this web site to claim your ID.
    • After claiming your ID please wait at least 30 minutes before logging off of your computer.
    • Log back onto your computer using your new Network ID and password.
  • If your workstation is not part of the Campus Active Directory your computer login will not change after following this process.
  • Please see your LAN administrator or responsible IT person in your department for more information.

My department does not utilize the Campus Active Directory server, will this affect us?

  • If your department administers their own Active Domain environment, and does not receive account information from the Campus Active Directory or from the current Network ID system, you will have no changes to make.  However, your users will still need to “claim” their new Network ID in order to use services on Campus that require a Network ID.

I have systems that use the IT LDAP authentication server, how will this affect me?

  • If your department utilizes the IT LDAP authentication server, there may be substantial changes that you need to make on your end systems.  It is recommended that you contact the IT LDAP administrators for specific testing instructions.  At this time we believe that we have been in contact with all System Administrators who utilize the IT LDAP server and all are aware of the upcoming changes.
